The supply of low-carbon energy is one of the greatest global challenges of our time. Major breakthroughs in clean energy technologies require advances in new materials and a deeper understanding of these materials on the atomic scale. But how can we develop new crystalline materials to produce better batteries for electric cars and for storing energy from renewables such as wind and solar?

In this talk, materials chemist and 2016 Christmas Lecturer Saiful Islam will explain how the use of atomistic modelling on supercomputers in close synergy with experimental studies can help to understand and design better materials for clean energy applications, particularly electric vehicle batteries and next-generation solar cells. 10 years on from his CHRISTMAS LECTURES on energy, Saiful will navigate how the field has changed and what is coming next.
