The Sexy Dolphin and Other Amazonian Myths for Our Urban Jungle

Clifton Way, Cambridge, CB1 7GX

This show is for over 18's only. ID may be required at the door.
Description

A young woman meets a handsome man by the river; a hunter encounters a beautiful woman in the forest. Both go along with the mysterious stranger, but later fall ill, lose their minds – even die. It soon becomes clear: the stranger was not human at all, but a dolphin in disguise.

Plunge into the deeper meanings of Amazonian dolphin folklore with Dr Eliran Arazi, an anthropologist specialising in the Colombian Amazon, shamanism and human–animal relations, and the complex history of Indigenous–European encounters in the region. Through field anecdotes and personal stories, discover how dolphin myths speak to capitalist lifestyles and the attention economy we inhabit today – and what Indigenous coca culture can teach us about resisting the dolphin’s dangerous allure in the Amazonian jungle and the city alike.

Dr Eliran Arazi is an anthropologist at the University of Cambridge, studying myths and shamanism, human–animal relations, and economic engagement in the Colombian Amazon. He has written on historical, religious, and cultural phenomena from around the world in various journals and podcasts, and has appeared on international news broadcasts commenting on current events in the Amazon.
