Early James is the stage name of singer, guitarist and songwriter Frederick James Mullis Jr., born in Troy, Alabama on June 2, 1993 and founder of Early James & the Latest. After receiving his first guitar as a Christmas present at the age of sixteen, he began learning to play it and wrote his first songs, notably inspired by Johnny Cash.

He began by opening for his friend’s band Fire Mountain, then moved to Birmingham, where he took his pseudonym and formed Early James & the Latest in the early 2010s. During a concert, he was visited by Dan Auerbach, half of the blues rock duo The Black Keys, who signed him in 2019 to his label Easy Eye Sound and produced the first album Singing for My Supper (2020), in which his mix of blues, rock, Americana, folk and country flourishes.
